Crafter Cast Show #18

Welcome back!
Welcome to Crafter Cast Show #18 ~ Getting ready for Halloween and the holidays ~ My kids have been changing their minds too often for us to start making the costumes. The latest thing they want to be is a fairy and a dragon. I wanted them to be something related to craft products and they picked a ruler and pair of scissors, but that went out the window in about a day.
The Holiday Countdown course will help you get exited for the holidays! Excited and prepared. Sign up over at the holiday countdown page and start receiving tips today. I’m looking forward to reading what Cara has put out because I’m just not in that mood still. The costumes at the craftster.org forum have helped, as well as searching for jewelry ideas on etsy.

Welcome to Crafter Cast Show #17 ~ Memorial Crafting ~ I look at memorial crafting as both crafting that is done to remember someone, and in my case getting ready for a memorial. Traditionally a memorial is done a year after someone passes away and you spend the year preparing for it. If you have read my craft blog you know I’ve had a rough year so I am using this next year to work on getting ready for the memorial.
What kinds of memorial crafts have you created, or what do you think of now? Scrapbooks, photo albums, quilting, prayer shawls and prayer beads come to mind for me. I’m thinking of ways I can help my children with a memorial craft, of what they can do and what would help them cope with a loss. In addition to preparing for my Grandma’s memorial, I plan on creating something for myself and for each of my kids.

Welcome to Crafter Cast Show #16 ~ What our families have taught us and how we will pass it on.
My Grandma recently passed away and during the drive back to Texas I spent my time thinking about her. She taught me how to bead on a loom, always let me (as a little kid) write on her crossword puzzles, and always explained whatever she was teaching. I’m sure it was my Mom and Grandma who taught me how to sew and embroider. They were never afraid to let me try something out, to use the sewing machine and try it out.

Let’s play catch up! We have moved, getting settled in and I’ve completed projects. I finished a baby quilt in an afternoon that I will soon send to a friend of mine.

Machine Quilted Baby Quilt
I also started a rag quilt and have an update on my tshirt quilt. We have a few craft kits for kids found on etsy that the kids will be working on - I held back from starting because of needing to find tools and wanting to incorporate the kits with our homeschooling.
What projects have you been working on?

We are adding to our video tutorial series with Bradie of Quiltcetera. I met Bradie on twitter and was able to watch one of her ustream live quilting shows, which I am very much looking forward to her restarting! Starting a site with video tutorials is easy to do, as you will hear. Bradie and her husband, Matt, started in just a day.

This week starts a crafty business series. First up we have the basics - domain names, hosting, web design. Who do you work with? Are they easily accessible? Do you have a domain name or are you on a free space like blogspot.com? Listen in for our recommendations and tip for running a craft business. The series will continue throughout the summer.

I recommend 1and1.com for domains - they offer private domain registrations which means your personal information can be hidden from anyone searching. Remember your real information must be held with the company - making your domain name private just means someone has to go through the company to find it out.
Mom Webs Hosting is hands down the best web hosting out there. The support is amazing, the price is very reasonable and if you are techie enough, get the package that allows you to have behind the scenes access. With the Web Hosting Manager you can add your own domains to your package as well as control the allotted space and bandwidth. Of course the support people will also do this for you but the option is there. This is also known as a reseller package but I just use mine for my own personal use.
Free can be good - but if you want to look and be professional, having a dot com space is the way to go. We’ll talk more about web design and how to create your space online next time.

Creating video tutorials is a quick and easy way to share a technique with your audience - be it other crafty friends or customers. This week I am talking with Holly Endress, a Stampin Up demo for the past seven years. Holly has been making video tutorials showcasing various techniques which she then posts on her blog, InkaDinkaDoodle. Holly’s stamping blog has her videos posted as well as several cards she has made. I’ve been a customer of Holly’s for the past few years as we met in Washington State when our husbands were both stationed in the area and I am so glad she started making videos. It is often hard to create in a new community when your old community was full of get togethers and it was easy to throw ideas off of one another.

Let’s talk about stepping out of your comfort zone! What can you do to get out of the space you are most comfortable with? I highlight three sites that make me want to make jewelry, make whatever I can and dye my hair. I wish I lived in a town that had cooler thrift stores because I can never find anything vintage in ours.
Push yourself just a little - take a step toward doing something you just haven’t been able to do.
